The Sunday broadsheet newspaper by the name of Sunday Herald was launched in 7 February 1999 by the Scottish Media Group.

Along sustaining its sister titles The Herald and Evening Times it was sold on 5 April 2003 to Newsquest (a Gannett company) after the super public media debate. Questions were raised in the Scottish Parliament when the Barclay brothers, owners of rival papers The Scotsman and Scotland on Sunday, looked placed to get owners.

Andrew Jaspan was editor from launch until 2004, when he resigned to turn into editor of The Age in Melbourne, Australia. Richard Walker was known as his replacement. Walker, 49, got been using a title since its launch & experienced served when deputy to Jaspan for 5 years.
